George Mason's Gunston Hall
GUNSTON HALL, known as The Home of American Rights, is the historic home of founding father George Mason, author of the 1776 Virginia Declaration of Rights. Learn how George’s work influenced the Declaration of Independence and the US Bill of Rights. The historic site features George Mason’s Georgian-style mansion (built 1755 - 1759) situated on 550+ acres with Potomac River views. The site includes a visitor center, the exhibition Revolutionary Rights, three hiking trails, reconstructed outbuildings, and a historic riverside garden (open to the public on September 29, 2023.) Daily tours invite visitors to explore details of George Mason’s life, his ideas, and to think critically about the important principles and implications of the Virginia Declaration of Rights.
